The "Young Marine Biologist Award" is an annual competition by Underwater World Singapore to engage students in marine conservation through the course of working on a project.
In this particular competition, the project involved the making of a mural that encompassed 5 different effects of global warming on namely the Coral Reef ecosystem and ocean acidification, marine turtles, marine animals at the poles, melting of polar ice caps and global sea level rise and ocean currents.
Students Dickson Goh Yaoming, Sundra Gaytri Meriange and Chloe Tan Yi Ting from the Diploma in Biotechnology Course at Temasek Polytechnic (TP) took up this challenge because it complemented the work that they were completing for their Differential Research Project which was on coral conservation.
Their efforts were rewarded with the second prize! The prizes were sponsored by Akira and Pageone bookstore. Each member received an Akira portable DVD player and two Pageone bookstore book vouchers.
The project enabled the students to acquire a greater understanding of global warming and its effects on marine life forms. The team hopes that their mural would help raise public awareness on the impact of global warming.
