Four Temasek Applied Science School (ASc) student teams comprising 12 students submitted 4 projects for the Singapore Chemical Science Fair Competition 2006. This annual competition on research projects in specific areas in chemistry and chemical sciences was organised by the National University of Singapore to promote and support chemical science research project work in schools and polytechnics in Singapore.
One of the four ASc teams from the Diploma in Chemical Engineering won the 2nd prize (Palladium award) in the 'Senior' category, which is open to students from polytechnics and junior colleges. ASc was the only polytechnic team that clinched an award under the 'Senior' category.
The winning project was entitled "Investigation of Various Synthesis Routes for Iron Platinum (FePt) Nanoparticles". The project team successfully synthesised FePt magnetic nanoparticles in ASc's Nanotechnology Research Facility and would be looking into developing such particles for potential applications in bioseparations and cancer treatment in the immediate future.
