The bacterium, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, commonly found in hospitals, was the object of study by talented, third year students, Kelven Lam, Koh Yong Xian and Lim Yu Xiang. The trio from Diploma in Chemical Engineering (ChE) tasted sweet success when their poster presentation titled “Photocatalytic Disinfection of Pseudomonas aeruginosa” entered for the ISPE (Singapore) Student Poster Competition in June 2007 was awarded the 1st prize!
For their outstanding achievement, an invitation was issued by the ISPE (International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineers) for Lim Yu Xiang to represent the group at the prestigious 2007 ISPE Annual Meeting (4 - 7 November 2007) at Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, to meet other students and industry professionals, learn about industry trends, and make valuable connections.
Yu Xiang said, “This was my first time traveling overseas and I was really nervous about it. By attending the student workshop, I was able to acquire the necessary skills and techniques that are useful to my future job-hunting. The mock job interview was enriching and the mentors were very experienced. As they came from various reputable companies, I was able to gather information to get an idea of the expectations of industry professionals. In my opinion ISPE should organize more of such events for students as it will be beneficial to them.”
Temasek Polytechnic certainly hopes more of our students will follow the path blazed by Kelven Lam, Koh Yong Xian and Lim Yu Xiang, who have helped to put Temasek Polytechnic and Singapore on the international map!
