Enabling local SME’s in sustainable food initiatives

Temasek Applied Science School (ASc) provides food research and consultancy services to Singapore’s food enterprises in areas such as extension of shelf life, creation of healthy and innovative foods, improvement in product quality, plant and processes, etc.

In addition, we provide technical assistance in areas such as food safety, Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP), food hygiene and sanitation, quality control and assurance, sensory evaluation and food analysis. We also conduct feasibility studies for companies who wish to set up of a new food processing line.  Training in food hygiene, HACCP and sensory analysis are also available at ASC.

Being an educational institution, ASc’s main aim for carrying out industry projects is to incorporate real-life experience into students’ training and to keep our staff’s professional expertise in line with the industry trends. Our staff are well trained in food science and food technology with many years of experience in responsible positions in QA/QC, R&D, production, HACCP and food hygiene, etc. They impart their expertise in the industry projects to train students as supervisors in these industry projects. Our commitment in real-life training could be seen in setting up “KoolWerkz” TP’s Training Factory.  The factory manufactures ice cream, under AVA license, at the HDB food premises - Gourmet East Kitchen.

ASc has carried out more than 25 projects in this field over the last 2 years. Our clients include those in the ice cream, noodle, soybean products, food flavour, bakery and cake businesses, minced and dried meat industry, shelf stable ready packed meal producers, jam, drink industries, etc. We also assist private, start-up enterprises that have no R&D facilities as their R&D consultant in food product/process development.

We have excellent connections with organizations such as Singapore Food Manufacturer’s Association (SFMA), Agri and Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA), Standards, Productivity and Innovation Board (SPRING), Singapore, Health Promotion Board (NPB), National Environment Agency (NEA), Singapore Institute of Food Science & Technology (SIFST), etc. This coupled with our collaborations with food-related suppliers of food ingredients, machineries, and packaging materials and accredited testing laboratories enable us to contribute to the SME’s success.
