Greenwave Environmental Care Competition
Going green just seems to be the in thing these days and as usual, the TP team did not disappoint us in last year's Greenwave Environmental Care Competition 2006, organised by Sembawang Shipyard to promote green awareness and innovation in students. Our team, comprising Varinder Singh Bal and Toh Yi Da from Chemical Engineering, Temasek School of Applied Science, bagged the “Encouragement Award” for their project, “Recycling of Used Cooking Oil to Make Soap”.
By collecting used cooking oil and developing soap from it, this project seeks to minimise waste treatment and disposal costs. Using used oil as the primary raw material, this soap-making process is environmentally-friendly and at the same time, reduces the detrimental impact of used cooking oil disposal to the environment. The project aims to develop a technology for soap-making, which can be practised in schools and third world countries to prevent pollution and generate additional income in the long run.
