The Training Facility serves as a platform for students to acquire knowledge of operation for the mass propagation of tissue culture plantlets in an actual production environment.
At the Training Facility, students are not only trained in specific tissue culture laboratory skills, they are also exposed to the process and workflow in a real-life production environment. In this way, students are able to better appreciate the industrial applications of different laboratory techniques taught in class.
The Facility is currently helping local nurseries to mass produce orchid plantlets for hobbyists and sterile plantlets of heliconia and ginger for export purposes. It also produces a variety of exotic ornamental plants (heliconia, ginger, costus and orchid) which are packaged as souvenirs for tourists and sold to gift shops. Sale of the products offers additional dimensions in our training as the students are given opportunities to practise their communications skills. The training scope of the Unit is therefore in-line with TP's aim to provide students a holistic education.
