TP Herb Gardens, with a collection of more than 120 species of medicinal plants, have been organised as part of Temasek Applied Science School (ASc) comprehensive technical competency development in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
The developmental project comprises an open concept garden and a specially designed nursery. The nursery serves as a centralized location for TP's collection of medicinal plants. Plants grown in the nursery will be classified into various groups based on their medicinal properties. Plant propagation works are also carried out in the nursery. The open herb gardens utilise medicinal plants for landscaping and are organised in plots under different themes such as 'colourful/painted garden', 'fragrant garden' and 'orchard'.
The gardens developed will serve as a useful teaching tool for the identification and classification of plants commonly used in TCM by both TP and the Singapore Chinese Physicians' Association (SCPA), our partner for the development of herb gardens. With the growth of medicinal plants in open grounds and the setting up of information plaques, not only will staff, students and visitors strolling through the campus be able to enjoy the beautiful landscaping, they will also be able to learn more about the names and uses of the plants. TP will become not just an institute of higher learning, but also a provider of education outside the classroom.
