Proteomics - the global protein analysis of biological samples - is fast becoming an important technology platform in biomedical research. In order to position itself as a center for proteomics training and R&D, ASc initiated the development of a Proteomics Research Facility at the Temasek Applied Science Research Centre. Equipped with instruments for protein prefractionation, 2D gel analysis, two-dimensional HPLC, gel spot cutting / processing and protein identification (via MALDI), the Proteomics Research Facility will provide the capability to perform the main steps of a proteomics workflow. The facility also has the capabilities for molecular and biochemical analysis of the identified proteins.
It is envisaged that the Proteomics Research Facility will be extensively used for student and staff projects as well as for collaborative research with the industry. The facility is well supported by other facilities including Biosafety Level 2 Laboratories, cold room, media preparation rooms, instrument rooms etc. Amongst the first project currently carried out at the Proteomics Research Facility is a collaborative effort with the Singapore General Hospital on the proteomic analysis of nosocomial pathogens with the aim of identifying proteins of potential clinical relevance and utility.
